The UK Government has announced a series of measures to accelerate the deployment of heat pumps as part of its broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The report, published on 31st December 2024, responds to an Environmental Audit Committee inquiry entitled ‘Enabling sustainable electrification of the UK economy’, that made recommendations pertaining to energy generation, storage and flexibility.

The government’s responses center around making heat pumps more affordable, simplifying consumer adoption, and building resilient supply chains to meet the growing demand for low-carbon heating solutions.

In the report, DESNZ acknowledges that “Heat pumps will have a major role to play in all net zero pathways and government expects most properties will ultimately switch to heat pumps as these are a proven technology and have been installed in high numbers in other countries.”

With most properties projected to eventually adopt heat pumps, the Government says it is backing this transition with substantial investments and regulatory reforms to address barriers such as affordability, planning restrictions and energy infrastructure readiness.
